MASONRY CONSTRUCTION Magazine Announces 2009 Project of the Year

Washington, DC, November 5, 2009. — Masonry Construction magazine has selected J.P. Cullen & Sons’ (Janesville, Wis.) restoration of Milwaukee City Hall as its 10th annual Project of the Year.

When restoring Milwaukee City Hall, the J.P. Cullen & Sons’ craftsmen carefully restored the structure’s exterior by preserving existing masonry elements and installing new terra cotta sculptures and reliefs. The contractor’s team also repaired and replaced hundreds of thousands of deteriorating brick, taking extra safety measures to protect pedestrians and traffic on the busy streets below. The project team developed an innovative method to tuckpoint the wall joints, which were half the standard size. They also solved the challenge of installing flashing behind the masonry element to minimize any future water damage to the historic 1897 façade.

“The 2009 Project of the Year demonstrates the mason contractor’s importance in developing innovative solutions for the repair and restoration process,” said Rick Yelton, editor in chief of Masonry Construction, the leading magazine for the masonry industry.

Masonry Construction magazine’s Project of the Year exemplifies mason contractors’ contributions, including helping architects and engineers create the best masonry has to offer, exceptional problem solving and teamwork, painstaking restoration and repair work, and environmentally friendly construction. The awards include one overall Project of the Year and winners in 11 categories. Winning projects will be featured in the November/December issue of Masonry Construction. The team from each project will be honored in an awards ceremony at the World of Concrete/World of Masonry in Las Vegas, Feb. 2-5, 2010.
